“BUILD A BETTER FUTURE” appeal

This appeal launched on 28/05/22.

The key priorities for this appeal are to address the following:

#Severe impact of increased food prices & no job opportunities

Financial uncertainties are present both here in the UK and equally in Uganda . Uganda is however on the edge of severe difficulties related to the rising costs of food prices in what is already a volatile situation with widespread and severe poverty. Families living in slum conditions simply cannot afford to feed their families. For example, the basic diet of Ugandans is posho- a porridge like meal. A bowl of posho now costs twice as much as before lockdown. Job opportunities are increasingly also difficult to find.

With no additional finances to support these additional costs, and no children’s social care support in Uganda, an acceleration towards further starvation across the country has already begun. Our teams are seeing the damaging effects of hunger and lack of finances on people’s health already, both mentally and physically. For many families who already live hand to mouth in slum conditions, and jobs few and far between, any income now generated simply is not enough to sustain them. The associated increased costs of food in Uganda & to us as a charity, now means we cannot provide the additional support that is needed; and sustaining an even basic food provision is now becoming a real challenge to us.

#Costs of teacher retention

Secondly, the Ugandan government has had to significantly increase the pay of their state school teachers in order to bolster urgent recruitment nationwide. This is because such vast numbers of teachers were lost during the pandemic with schools shutting, and teachers left their jobs to find an income elsewhere. With schools reopening now after a 2 years of lockdown, there is a huge drive for teacher recruitment, which is being driven by the government offering significantly higher earnings. This has left our school with a financial deficit that has to be made up, & we need to be able to retain our teaching staff and keep the school functioning. We now need to sustain a better income to support & retain these teachers, and to provide our school the extra food resources as detailed above.

Thank you for helping us to build a better future for these families- Together we are stronger.
